Defininition of Allergies

Allergies provoke a very wide range of symptoms, from the common known problems that everyone has heard of, for example a runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion; then itchy, watery, red eyes; also itchy ears, to not so big problems like a tickle in your throat, cough; asthma is also a point, wheezing, hives, shortness of breath, eczema, bee sting reactions, etc. Common is fatigue in allergy season. The older antihistamines which cause the drowsiness didn't help here with fatigue, but now the newer pharmaceuticals generally don't cause drowsiness.

People are getting allergy problems mostly because of an overactive immune system in which the gamma globulins are produced more than normal by the body. Gamma globulins normally are present to fight bacterial infections. But in the case of allergies, one special gamma globulins (it's called IgE) functions abnormally. It views the allergens as being a foreign bacteria - so the IgE attempts to "destroy" it. When IgE attaches to the pollen, a huge amount of chemicals including histamine are released into the body from the Mast cells, as a result patients show allergic symptoms.

A lot of people think that allergists deal only with allergy problems, but this is not true. As you can see from the information contained here, they have deal with a lot other problems including sinusitis, asthma, hives, and so on. Because you go to see an allergist in the next time, it doesn't mean that you necessarily will get treated just for "allergy" problems. Especially if you have other kinds of problems that are bothering you, like sinusitis. It also doesn't necessarily mean that you'll get allergy tested. There are a lot of other things that allergists can do here to help in addition to doing allergy testing.

Typically the history of allergy complaints is a very important thing that your doctor evaluates in an allergy evaluation, and a good allergist will spend enough time going through your history. After the careful evaluation and a physical exam your allergist will discuss proper treatment with you and possibly performing various allergy tests which we'll talk about later. Please consider, that there are plenty of treatments and medications around which we can suggest to help you. But of course the most important thing to do now in treating allergy problems is avoidance of the known allergens that cause problems. Please follow the links for further information.
